Various lawyers’ associations and defence lawyers’ associations have taken a stand on the situation in Ukraine shortly after the war began. They have condemned the war, which is contrary to international law, called for its immediate end and called on the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to immediately initiate investigations. Already one day after the beginning of the war, on 25 February 2022, the Council of European Bars (Commission de Conseil des Barreaux européens, CCBE), which represents 45 bar associations and thus more than 1 million lawyers, in a Stellungnahme über die Invasion der Ukraine Russland aufgefordert, die illegale Invasion der Ukraine zu beenden und die Anklagebehörde des Internationalen Strafgerichtshofes in Den Haag aufgefordert, unverzüglich Ermittlungen bzgl. der in der Ukraine begangenen internationalen Straftaten aufzunehmen, und betonte das Recht auf Asyl.

The European Criminal Bar Association (ECBA) also issued a statement in February 2022 strongly condemning the unprovoked attack by Vladimir Putin’s forces against Ukraine, calling on the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim A. A. Khan QC, to launch an immediate investigation, and urging the international community to end all extradition dealings with the Russian Federation, as it is clear that Russian assurances that human rights will be respected cannot be believed.

In a joint Presseerklärung vom 1. März 2022 haben der Deutsche Anwaltverein (DAV) und die Bundesrechtsanwaltskammer (BRAK) ebenfalls die Russische Föderation aufgefordert, den völkerrechtswidrigen Angriffskrieg auf dem Territorium des ukrainischen Staates sofort zu beenden, und sich der Forderung der CCBE angeschlossen, die in der Ukraine begangenen Taten vor Gericht zu bringen.
